No One Should Die Alone

Together, we can ensure no one faces their final moments alone.

How the Program Works

The No One Should Die Alone initiative connects trained volunteers with individuals nearing the end of life who may not have loved ones present.

In some cases, volunteers may have the opportunity to meet with a resident ahead of time, offering companionship and becoming a familiar presence.

Other times, volunteers may be contacted when a person is entering their final hours.

The role of the volunteer is simple: to offer calm, compassionate presence. Because in the final moments, presence is everything.

This may include sitting quietly at the bedside, holding a hand, reading aloud, or simply ensuring someone is there.

Volunteer Training (Free)

All volunteers receive free training through The Last Gift Initiative
before participating.

Training includes:

• Understanding the dying process
• Offering calm, compassionate presence
• Boundaries and emotional preparedness
• What to expect in hospice or care settings
• Supporting families and care staff respectfully

No prior experience is required.

The Last Gift Initiative is supported by DoulaVersity’s End-of-Life Death Doula Certification Program, which provides comprehensive training on the dying process, emotional support, and compassionate presence.

While volunteers for the No One Should Die Alone program receive free training, individuals who wish to pursue deeper professional education may explore the full certification program. Dedicated volunteers may become eligible for scholarship opportunities toward advanced training as well.

The Volunteer Process

To protect the individuals we serve, all volunteers complete a simple onboarding process.

  1. Volunteer application

  2. Background check

  3. Free training through The Last Gift Initiative

  4. Placement on the on-call volunteer list

Once approved, volunteers may be connected with participating facilities
in their area when a resident may benefit from companionship or end-of-life presence.

You do not need medical experience or prior training to participate in the
No One Dies Alone Initiative.

Getting started is simple—and you’ll be supported every step of the way.

Who Can Volunteer

Many of our volunteers are compassionate individuals who feel called to offer presence during life’s most vulnerable moments.

Volunteers may include:

• Retirees
• Faith community members
• Nursing or medical students
• End-of-life doulas
• Caregivers
• Community members who want to make a meaningful difference

No medical experience is required.
Compassion, heart, and a calm presence are what matter most.

If you feel called to offer quiet presence for individuals who may be nearing the end of life, we invite you to apply to become a volunteer with the No One Should Die Alone initiative.

After submitting your application, you will receive information about the background check and volunteer training required before participating.

If you are interested only in visiting residents for monthly companionship, please apply through the Adopt-a-Resident volunteer program.
