About The Last Gift Initiative

  • To ensure that individuals who may otherwise be overlooked still experience companionship, dignity, and meaningful human presence during life’s final season.

  • We envision communities where no one faces the end of life alone. Through compassionate volunteers and community partnerships, we aim to restore a culture where presence, kindness, and dignity remain part of every person’s final chapter.

  • At the heart of The Last Gift Initiative is a deep commitment to presence, dignity, and human connection. We believe that every person deserves to feel seen, valued, and respected, especially during life’s final chapter. Our work is guided by the understanding that small acts of compassion—sitting beside someone, listening to their stories, or simply sharing quiet moments—can have profound meaning.

We value presence, the simple yet powerful act of showing up for another human being. Volunteers and community partners offer companionship not through grand gestures, but through consistent and compassionate time spent together.

We believe strongly in dignity, honoring each individual’s life, story, and humanity. Every person deserves to be treated with respect and care, regardless of age, illness, or circumstance.

Finally, we believe in the importance of human connection. Meaningful relationships and moments of shared presence remind individuals that they are not forgotten and that their lives continue to matter until the very last moment.

Our Story

The inspiration for No One Should Die Alone came during the development of my end-of-life doula training program, through a deeply personal family experience.

A loved one nearing the end of life had very limited support. Despite the efforts of those who cared about him, the reality remained—when the final moments came, he did not have someone present.

That experience left a lasting impression.

It raised a question that became impossible to ignore:
How many people reach the end of life without anyone there?

From that question, a commitment was formed.

No One Should Die Alone exists to ensure that when someone reaches the final hours or days of life, they are met with presence, dignity, and compassionate support—not silence, and not isolation.

-Trisha Blizzard

The idea for Adopt a Resident™ began with a visit to a skilled nursing facility on Valentine’s Day. During that visit, a resident shared how much something as simple as a small treat and a kind gesture would mean—something she hadn’t experienced in a long time. She had no visitors, no regular connection, and very little to look forward to.

What followed was a small act of kindness—thoughtful, simple, and human. But the impact was anything but small. The next day, she shared that she had been in a very dark place, but that moment of connection had shifted something for her. It reminded her that she mattered.

That moment stayed with us.

It led to a simple question:
What if every visit included just a few extra minutes for someone who doesn’t have anyone?

From that question, Adopt a Resident™ was created—a way to bring consistent companionship and meaningful human connection to individuals who might otherwise be overlooked.

The Last Gift™ Initiative was born from two simple but powerful realizations—no one should feel forgotten, and no one should have to face the end of life alone.

The Power of Presence

Presence

The willingness to simply show up — to sit beside someone, listen to their stories, and offer calm companionship during meaningful moments.

Dignity

Honoring every person’s life, history, and worth, ensuring they continue to be treated with respect and compassion in life’s final chapter.

Human Connection

Creating moments of genuine interaction that remind individuals they are seen, valued, and not forgotten.

Who we are

The Last Gift™ Initiative was founded by Trisha Blizzard, alongside her sisters, Lori Gipson and Vonnie Lloyd, with a shared commitment to bringing meaningful connection and compassionate presence into care settings.

Together, they bring personal experience, insight, and a deep sense of purpose to this work—building a program designed to support individuals, families, and care communities in a way that is thoughtful, respectful, and sustainable.
