A simple act of companionship can change everything.
This program connects volunteers with residents who may otherwise go unseen—
ensuring no one is forgotten.
Already visiting a loved one in a care facility?
For some, this is a natural place to begin—simply extend a visit a few extra minutes to connect with another resident who may not have regular visitors.
If you already have someone in mind, you’re welcome to request to be matched with them. Otherwise, we’ll help connect you with someone nearby.
What Is Adopt a Resident?
The Adopt a Resident program connects volunteers with individuals living in care facilities who may not receive regular visits.
This program is designed to be simple, flexible, and easy to fit into your life.
Volunteers schedule their own visits, allowing them to show up in a way that works for their time and availability.
Through consistent companionship, volunteers offer something simple—but deeply meaningful: presence, conversation, and connection.
This isn’t about doing something extraordinary.
It’s about showing up, sitting beside someone, and reminding them they matter.
Sometimes, the most meaningful thing you can offer is simply your presence.
Why It Matters
When people visit care facilities, connection often happens in shared spaces—where residents are able to gather, socialize, and engage with others.
But many individuals remain in their rooms due to illness, mobility challenges, or cognitive decline.
These are often the residents who receive the fewest visits.
Over time, the absence of connection can lead to deep and quiet loneliness.
The Adopt a Resident program helps change that.
By offering consistent, one-on-one companionship, volunteers bring presence, conversation, and a sense of being seen—something every person deserves.
The best part of this program? Volunteers are only asked to spend one hour a month with their adopted resident.
You choose the time and the days based on your schedule!
If you happen to be in “the area” and only have time to spend 10 minutes with them - that matters too.
At The Last Gift Initiative™ we believe no one should be forgotten.
How the Program Works
Once you are approved as a volunteer, your commitment is simple.
Visits are flexible and designed to fit naturally into your schedule. You might spend time talking, listening, reading, or simply sitting quietly together.
Volunteers are asked to spend about 60 minutes each month with their assigned resident. This can be done in one visit or broken into shorter visits — whatever works best. Consistency matters more than duration.
You may choose to visit around meaningful moments — birthdays, holidays, or times when someone might otherwise feel left out. These small touches can make a lasting difference.
Gifts are never required, but thoughtful gestures are always welcome. If appropriate, something as simple as a favorite snack, a small treat, or a familiar comfort can bring joy and connection.
At its core, this work is about showing up — in whatever way feels natural — and reminding someone that they are not forgotten.
Getting Started
Getting started is simple and supported every step of the way.
All volunteers complete a brief onboarding process, which includes a background check, a short orientation, and an introduction to the role. This training is provided at no cost and is designed to help you feel confident, prepared, and supported.
We take care in matching volunteers with residents. Thoughtful consideration is given to personality, preferences, and availability to help create a connection that feels natural for both individuals.
Once matched, you’ll be introduced to someone special — and the relationship can grow from there.
Who Can Volunteer
Anyone with a desire to offer connection and companionship is welcome.
Volunteers should be able to travel to and from their assigned facility. When possible, we match volunteers with residents within their preferred area to make visits manageable and consistent. No prior experience is required.
Reliability, kindness, and a willingness to simply show up are what matter most.
Apply to volunteer and tell us a little about yourself. We’ll guide you through the rest.
